Horton Hears A Who!

“Horton Hears A Who”

( 2008 )

****

Jim Carrey and Steve Carrel star in this movie based off the classic children’s story with the same title.  The movie had my two favorite actors in it, so obviously, I had to see it.  The movie was basically about the end of the world, for Whoville.  Horton had the responsibility of taking the spec holding Whoville to safety, and he encounters several obstacles along the way.

One of the main obstacles of the film, was the antagonist, Kangaroo, who by the way, is completely insane.  In her point of view, Horton is going insane by hearing things, and talking to a small flower.  Does that give her the right to hire a vulcher, “Vlad,” to destroy Horton’s flower? It’s just ridiculous.  Let Horton be.

One thing was interesting.  Horton kept calling Who’s people, besides the fact that Who’s are not people, Horton lives in a huge forest completely full of animals.  He wouldn’t even know what a person is, let alone call strange beings on a flower “people.”

The movie was a children/family movie, and they did a great job attracting those in that genre.  I thought it was funny.  I wouldn’t mind seeing it again now and then, but it wasn’t amazing.  It didn’t make me stand in my seat and clap.  It was just ok.  I give it 4 stars, and recommend it to families for the most part.

Drillbit Taylor

“Drillbit Taylor”

( 2008 )

****

Owen Wilson plays “Drillbit Taylor,” a homeless man just trying to make his way through life with the little money he has.  When he meets two kids who are trying to hire a professional bodyguard to protect them from school bullies. Owen swindles them out of their weekly allowances while masquerading as an ex-military bodyguard.

Other critics have said that this film isn’t satisfying enough with its comedy.  They were always waiting for something more.  I believe they have some truths to what they said.  But I don’t believe it was as bad as they made it sound.  It was funny, just not “Pee My Pants” funny.

After this movie, and other movies starring Owen Wilson, I believe that whenever I see a new Owen Wilson film, I will be in the theater waiting, until Owen somehow manages to break his nose again.  He broke his nose more than usual in this film, I lost track actually.

Other thing critics have said about this movie.  They were expecting more from this film, due to the fact it was written by the same writer who wrote other rated “R” comedies like “Superbad,” and “Knocked Up”.  They compared this movie to those as more of a “Family film.”  That may be true, but it doesn’t make the movie worse.  If they took out all of the unnecessary language in this movie, and there was a lot, I believe it would be a family movie.

I would recommend to families that if they wish to watch this movie, just wait until it airs on television, and they censor the language.  It will be more satisfying.

Justice Leage: The New Frontier

“Justice League: The New Frontier”

( 2008 )

“For a split second, ‘Justice League: The New Frontier’ made me like DC more than Marvel. Here’s the review,”This movie was interesting. I usually like Justice League cartoons and everything, but I had no idea this was going to take place in the 50’s and 60’s. It’s based off the old comics and everything in their era. It tells the story about how all the members of the Justice League got together.

It showed some interesting things for that time zone. Everyone looked different in the movie; Superman looked like he was grabbed straight out of the old cartoon and comics, with the black logo. Flash was basically the same, but he did have a nice ring where his suit came out of it, and somehow, he got into the suit that just shot out of his ring. In the beginning, flash basically fights off Mr. Freeze, who in that time I guess was the leader of the Klu Klux Klan. I thought it was pretty funny that batman used old newspaper machines in the bat cave. Though it was neat they had the old bat mobile from the old television show.

The movie dealt with a lot of issues that were known in that time. For instance, it started off at the end of the war with North Korea. There was also issues with a secret society or cult that dealt with sacrificing kids. Otherwise known as “Scientology.” Though one of the main plots of the movie had to deal with the “Nevada testing site” otherwise known as “Ferris” AKA Area 51, basically.

Now the climax of the movie dealt with this crazy flying monster thing, that shot out other huge monsters that resembled the monsters from “Cloverfield.” I thought it was pretty stupid that they had Superman throughout the whole thing, and as he was the first to fight the main monster, within two seconds he was knocked out, and it was up to the rest of the team to finish it off.

It was kind of tough to see which character was the “Main” character. If I had to guess, it would be Ace, aka The Green Lantern, and his story, as well as The Flash, and Martian Manhunter’s story.

The fact that this was done set in that odd time frame, I think was a genius move on their part. It was very different, but very good. I give this 4 stars, and wouldn’t necessarily reccomend this to kids, because it is pretty violent, and it has language, since it is PG-13. Kids may enjoy it, but I don’t reccomend it to them. It’s more of a movie for teenagers. Thats all for now. Peace Out

Ocean’s 13

“Ocean’s 13″

(2007)

****

The gang is back again, in Ocean’s Thirteen.

I sometimes find it amazing how a film industry can re-invite several well known and popular actors to return to a movie together.  You sometimes see movies with good actors, but this trilogy, has one amazing cast, and I love to watch them work together.  Like all the Ocean’s movies, it involves a group of people orchestrating a heist against a Las Vegas Casino.  Also, along with the other movies, this movie was a little hard to follow, I was confused with the whole story when it came to the digging scenes, and the Mexico scenes.  Though that’s the thing about these films.  They leave certain parts out to keep you interested, and asking questions.

Again this doesn’t happen much but I found it difficult to look away during the film.  There was just so much covered in this film, you just might miss something if you blink.

The comedy in the film, as expected, was promising.  I loved all the actors’ disguises.  As ridiculous as they were, it added to the greatness of the film.

This movie was smart, and very well thought out. I loved watching all the puzzle pieces being put together.  I recommend this only to people who will be able to pay attention and understand complex storylines.

Vantage Point

“Vantage Point”

( 2008 )

*****

Vantage Point is what I can only begin to describe as a masterpiece.  I have never seen anything like it before, which is what made it unique.

The movie is about an assassination attempt on the current standing president of the United States, told in the perspective of several individuals.  Every time one perspective ended, and it started over again, there would be a cliffhanger, and I was left sitting on the edge of my seat, wondering what was going to happen next.  Each time a new perspective was told, a little more was added to the story, then once again, ended with a cliffhanger.

The audience was able to see the perspectives of several different people, including, a news team, and their cameras, the secret service, the president, the terrorists, and an innocent bystander played by Forest Whitaker.  After the perspectives all told the same tale multiple times, all perspectives clashed into one for a twisting, and satisfying conclusion.

I am always astounded when I see original movies such as this.  A lot of hard work must have been put into it to make it look as good as it did.  I give this 5 stars, and would recommend this to anyone to watch, that means you.  Peace Out
